Short films about Human Rights - UPF

On October 31st, 2003 the last session of the "I Cycle of short movies and conferences about Human Rights" promoted by the Alumni Association of Pompeu Fabra University, took place in the University. "Claim for Dignity" was invited and represented by Ester Vallès.

The chosen film was "The sky in her eyes" where an South African orphan girl, whose parents died because of AIDS, introduces us in her daily life. The 11’ movie brought in the discussion about the right to drugs in South Africa as well as Childhood rights. The film had been awarded in the section "En Certain Regard" of the Cannes Festival.

The succeeding discussion panel was integrated by:
- Ester Vallès, representative of the NGO "Claim for Dignity" (CxD)
- Joan Garcia, vicepresident of "Medicus Mundi" in Catalonia.
- Laura Mascarella, antropolog and nurse.
- Mawa Ndiaye, health agent.
- Vicenç Navarro, Public and Social Politics Professor in the Pompeu Fabra University.
Among the discussed ideas, it was pointed out the fact that health is a fundamental right but unfortunately managed by the economics logic of power installed in our unfair world. It was also remarked the opportunity we have to work from our reality to change social structures, and at the same time, we were warned about the urgency of immediate action. It is to notice the hopeful data coming from Kampala where in latest years "Medicus Mundi" has achieved that the number of AIDS infected persons decreased because of its health programs mainly based on two points: health education and use of condoms.

Some of us had the sensation that could have been more interesting if the theme had been more centred and they had been distributed better the times and shifts of word. Practically there was no dialogue and nothing of the short movie one was commented.
